An electrical fire broke out at 7.45 am in an oven in a pastry laboratory at an industrial catering plant. The plant was centrally situated in a 2,400 m² building. The cooks intervened in vain using fire extinguishers, alerted the fire service at 8:06 am and switched off the power supply, the gas valve located outside of the building and the cooker extractor ventilation system. When the emergency services arrived at 8:15 am, the flames had spread to the suspended ceilings and engulfed the entire building. Forty-five employees were evacuated. Traffic was halted in the street where the establishment is located in order to facilitate the intervention of the emergency services. The 90 fire-fighters involved used 8 large hoses (including 3 on engines with hydraulic arms or turntable ladders) supplied by 8 fire engines. They contained the fire within 2 hours and extinguished it completely at around 4 pm, after 600 m³ of water had been used during the operations. The following night, a security company monitored the site and the emergency services carried out 2 patrols with a thermal imaging camera. Three-quarters of the plant was destroyed and the stocks of food products that had been completely burned were disposed of by a private company. No information was given as regards the possible presence of refrigeration installations and the damage that they might have sustained. No environmental impact was reported. Following the fire, 80 of the plant’s employees were temporarily laid off. The damaged building was demolished following an assessment, and the operator continued its activity on another site. The inspection authorities for classified facilities asked the operator to provide an accurate accident report accompanied by the measures taken to prevent a recurrence. A forensic examination was carried out in order to determine the cause of the fire.
