A fire broke out in an 800 t silo of dry shavings supplying a production line at a wood panel manufacturing plant, Before the fire, the automatic system used for emptying the silo from the bottom was out of order. It had been replaced with a manual extraction system operated by suction from the top of the storage silo. According to the operator, the shavings had therefore been stored without movement for several days and had been compacted under their own weight, which could have caused them to spontaneously ignite, followed by an outbreak of fire. After controlling this first fire, fire-fighters intervened again the following day on a new outbreak of fire in the silo. The shavings that were burnt or soiled by the fire extinguishing water were removed. The silo cleaning operations lasted 5 days. The cost of the damage was estimated at €60,000. Following these 2 accidents, the operator increased the dimensions of the chipping extraction system and installed a by-pass transporting the shavings directly from the dryer to the production line. This system was equipped with detectors and a rapid emptying system to the outside. Metal beams were also installed half-way up the silo to reduce the pressure exerted on the shavings.
