A fire broke out in a solvent-based staining booth at a coffin manufacturing plant that had been shut down for a maintenance operation. A maintenance technician was changing the location of a lighting unit in the upper part of the booth when his electric drill generated a hot spot. The fire spread to 15 pumps connected to the drums of solvents (located 2 m from the booth), and then to the entire varnishing workshop passing through the suction inlets and smoke vents that were automatically opened. The staff intervened using the fire aid hose system before the fire-fighters extinguished the fire completely using three hoses. The maintenance technician injured his ankle in a fall. There was extensive material damage: 300 m² of roofing destroyed, 2 booths, pumps and a drying tunnel that could no longer be used. One hundred and sixty employees were temporarily laid off for 5 days. The product staining activity (1st stage of the coffin varnishing process) was shut down and transferred to another of the group’s plants. The inspection authorities for classified facilities asked the operator to provide an accident report proposing corrective actions. The operator activated the sprinklers in the varnishing workshop and is looking into replacing the solvent-based stains with water-based stains.
