In a 200 sq. m woodworking shop, an employee was operating a tenoner when flames surged from the machine and spread through the workshop via the suction duct. This worker and a fellow employee attempted to contain the outbreak using two extinguishers. Some 20 fire-fighters responded with heavy hydraulic resources (a large hose, six variable flow hoses, 2 pump-and-tank wagons), some of which were deployed to protect a fuel tank. Despite this extensive mobilisation, the fire fed by wood and solvents spread to an adjoining 200 sq. m warehouse owned by a roofing company. The operator of this second facility barely had the time to evacuate its gas bottles. The two businesses were destroyed, but the walls of the roofing company’s building remained intact. The two firms’ 10 total employees were all made redundant.
