Around 8 pm, fire broke out in the 975-m² hangar of a metal waste recovery and storage centre containing so-called special industrial wastes, namely: aerosols, polyurethane, solvents, paints, and plastic. The blaze had started in a stockpile of aerosol sprays and then spread to a lorry and other combustibles (plastics, other wastes). Fire-fighters intervened with both water and foam hoses. Four SNCF tracks were closed to rail traffic for 90 min. The outbreak was controlled after a 5-hour battle, with monitoring continuing until the next day. A malicious act was considered highly probable. Inspection Authorities visited the site the next day and made the following recording: the warehouse that burned was not located on parcels initially authorised for storing metal waste. Moreover, the operator was performing a special industrial waste storage and transit activity without the proper authorisation. Subsequent to this visit, the operator was requested to submit a detailed report on the fire and specific indications regarding all destroyed or damaged waste, plus conditions surrounding the elimination of liquid and solid wastes as well as any materials and earth that may have been polluted (soil, storage building periphery). Authorities also proposed that the Prefect issue an injunction to the warehouse operator requiring compliance with the conditions of his operating permit within 1 month (exercising its activity only on authorised parcels, refusal to accept non-authorised products on-site) and filing within 3 months of a new use authorisation application covering all parcels where the company anticipates conducting activities covered by the legislation on Classified Facilities.
