Fire broke out in the weaving workshop of a textile factory. At 12:30 pm on a Sunday, the 6 employees working at the site observed smoke escaping from the ceiling of a weaving workshop; they also discovered that one of the ceiling plates was melting and responded using 2 extinguishers. Once this plate had fallen, they noticed fire smouldering between the roof and ceiling. The foreman ordered the factory evacuated, shut off the electricity supply and alerted the fire department. Some 60 fire-fighters had the blaze under control after a 6½-hour battle. Property damage was extensive: 2,000 of the 9,000 m² of roofing destroyed; 20 looms rendered inoperable by either the fire or the extinction water, causing a corrosion risk; and electrical circuits were degraded. Response crews had to remove tiles from one of the bays to prevent fire from spreading inside other bays. Only the administrative offices were spared. Most employees had to be made redundant. This outbreak was of an accidental origin. On 24th September, fire again broke out around 10 pm near an electric motor, destroying another 3 looms. Following these 2 accidents, the factory operator filed a building permit application to rebuild the destroyed building. Several looms could be repaired and the entire workforce was reinstated.
