In a wood panelling factory, a piece of wood stuck in a machine rubbing against a moving part began to heat. The incandescent particles produced entered the suction system and caused a fire to break out in the 200-m³ wood chip and sawdust silo filled to ¾ its capacity. The factory operator responded with extinguishers, while sprinkling and isolating zones where combustion had started, before setting up a monitoring schedule. The incident was considered resolved by the next morning, and the suction system was turned back on; just a few minutes later however, the fire re-ignited. Fire-fighters controlled the situation in 2 hours. After waiting another 2 hours, they opened the metal silo door. Sawdust blew outside, accompanied by a dust cloud that quickly ignited. The flash reached fire-fighters stationed closest to the door; one of them sustained 3rd-degree burns over 5% of his body and required hospitalisation. Less intense flashes occurred throughout the afternoon as a sawdust pile settled during drainage of the silo. Fully extinguished sawdust was taken to a municipal dump. The environmental impact was very minor given that the wood involved had not been treated. The sawdust and wood chip suction system was slightly damaged, and the boiler using these combustibles had to be shut down. Weakened by the dust explosion and fire, the concrete block silo was temporarily consolidated. The operator planned to build a 2nd silo and studied implementing a more sophisticated fire protection system.
