After a 50,000-liter capacity liquid fertiliser tank began leaking on a farm, 5000 liters of a 39% nitrogenous solution spilled at the end of the afternoon into a gutter running adjacent to the RN 151 highway. To contain this leak and avoid significant pollution of the nearby streams and SAINTE EUGENIE River also in the vicinity, 30 fire-fighters including a chemical emergency squad installed pneumatic cushions under the cracked. With a backhoe, the farmer built small dams along the gutter in order to reduce flows. Local authorities came on-site to assess the pollution risks. The local gendarmerie was also called to manage traffic and carry out an investigation. Two tanker lorries from a drainage company were used to transfer the 25,000 to 30,000 liters of fertiliser remaining in the damaged tank into containers at the site of the cooperative located hundred metres from the farm. First responders were able to limit damage by recovering a portion of the spilled fertiliser, whose infiltration had been slowed by the frozen ground. Tank wear and corrosion caused this leak, as a break in the metal tank bottom could be observed over a 10-cm length and 2-cm width.
