In a closed automobile scrapyard, fire broke out at around 5:30 pm on a pile of vehicles that had been cleaned and prepared for demolition. The site guardian attempted to extinguish the blaze with an extinguisher before notifying emergency services, which arrived 30 min after the outbreak. Around 8 pm, a crane driver was called to untangle the vehicles so as to better combat the fire. Fire-fighters left the site after 9 hours of effort. Besides the direct discharge of combustion gases and smoke into the atmosphere, extinction water reached the site’s storm water drainage network, which flowed into the SEINE River via a hydrocarbon separator. According to the site operator, this was an act of arson. The Inspectorate proposed a Prefectural order requesting a study be conducted of site impacts and hazards in order to determine appropriate corrective measures.
