The release of 550 kg of Toluendiisocyanate (TDI) occurred at 17h10 in a polyurethane moulding production plant. A rotary shaft oil seal unit on a TDI-delivery pump failed between the lubrication chamber and isocyanate pumping area, thus causing the isocyanate to be pushed into the open lubrication system and released in a secondary containment basin.

The production hall was evacuated and the entrances were secured. A staff member suffered from respiratory disturbances and was put under observation by the on-site medical service. Material damages were estimated at ca. 2 000 DM (1 000 euros) and disposal costs at 3 000 DM (1 500 euros).

The operator installed a sealed lubricating system on the TDI-delivery pump, equipped with a level indicator. A leakage detector near the TDI-delivery pump and the pump support was also installed and the TDI-pump support was enclosed in a casing.
